Kohler 30 year old single handle shower valve - cold water only

I sand paper cleaned the cold and hot water valves. Each valve slides freely in the plastic housing. If I rotate the valve assembly 180 degrees only the hot water works. What else could cause one side not work?

We have a home that is 3 years old. We never used the 3rd bathroom shower until today. We have a Moen single knobe shower/bath valve. To get water from the faucet you pull the knob out. To adjust the water temp - Left for hot and right for cold. When rotated to the left for hot the water shuts off. When rotated to the right we get only cold water. Could the valve be installed wrong or could the cartridge be installed wrong? Kevin

Remove handle to gain acess to the temperature limit stop. Remove handle and pull out handle adapter kit and next there is a dail that can be adjusted to control the water to balance the temp. It could have been installed wrong, pay attention to where it is now and pull it back to it disengages out of the stem and move it counter clockwise a little and reinstall. Put handle on and test water for correct movement. Go to link below for a part's diagram if needed. TO ORDER PARTS CALL: 1-800-465-6130

Sure - there is always help at FixYa! This sounds like a bad cartridge. They can be replaced. To replace the cartridge: Turn off the water to the tub/shower. Remove the handle cover (it should pop off) Remove the center screw (usually phillips head) Remove the retaining clip holding cartridge in - you can use a pair of long nose piers or a small screwdriver Grab the cartridge with a pair of pliers and pull straight out. It may require a little force - there are O-rings around the cartridge to keep it from leaking. Check the cartridge bore (the hole where the cartridge was removed) Clean any debris or scale - lime away or CLR will work Apply a little bit of soap around the new cartridge to help it slide in easier. Push it all the way in and make sure it is seated. Re-install the clip (you should have received a new clip with the replacement cartridge) Turn the water back on a check for leaks If OK, reinstall the knob screw, and cap. Let Mom take her warm shower...:)

Moen single handle valve tub/shower

The Moen Posi-Temp Valve is a pressure balanced valve and when not used for long periods of time they can stick causing only cold or hot water to pass through the valve. A New Posi-temp cartridges can be purchased at most plumbing supply houses or big box outlets such as Lowes or Home Depot. As long as you had cold water before, a new cartridge will solve the problem. In the future it would be wise to occassionally operate the valve at least a couple of times a month in order to keep the pressure assembly from becoming lodged in position. Just follow the instructions included with the new cartridge on the proper removal of the old cartridge and the installation of the new cartridge. a little silicone grease inside of the valve before installing the new cartridge will also help. Be sure that there is no particles of the old cartridge left in the valve. sanray

My shower valve is approx 20 years old but it is not used more than 20 times per year. spare bathroom. valve controls the volume of water ok and will control the hot water normal. as soon as i turn to the cold side , the flow completely stops. not one drop of cold water. help

First, remove the shower head and test the valve. If you have plenty of water at the shower with the head removed, then the problem is a clogged shower head. Clean it or replace it. What the hell...just replace it. You deserve it. Go buy one of those cool shower massage heads to replace it. If you discover you have poor flow at the head with the shower head removed, then you have a blockage in your valve. So you buy a 1/2 (female pipe thread) x Hose Thread adapter. Put that on the arm for your shower head. Turn off the water to the house. Borrow a neighbors hose and run it through a window and connect it to the shower head (hose thread adapter). Now take the hose off your washer box and drop the hose into the drain hole. Now turn on the water. The water from your neighbor will allow you to backflush that valve. The debris will backflush and wash out through your laundry hose on down the drain. If that doesn't work, then yes, you probably need to replace the entire valve. (I'm assuming your already taken the cartridge apart and cleaned it) == Answer= Is your tub spout still running alot of water through it when you use the shower? If so replace spout, if three valve, replace center diverter. If that is all ok, Then yes take off shower head and see if you have the pressure, if so install new shower head and or clean. If not head, then screw on .5 x hose adpt. to the shower arm, you will have to have one washer hose to connect to your outside faucet then to your garden hose which will connect to the shower arm. Leave faucet hot and cold water off, turn on outside faucet all the way, this will let the water go through the valve and out the spout. If this does not work replace faucet.

Hot water pressure is weak. Shower head isn't clogged. Cold water pressure is good. How do I increase the hot water pressure?

Is the hot water pressure good at other fixtures in the house? I'm guessing your newer valves have a scolding adjustment that is set very low. Check the instructions that came with the valve assembly.
