How to tighten the hinges on a slow close toilet seat?

I have a close coupled mini toilet with a slow close seat. It appears that to access the seat fastenings and hinges you have to remove hinge covers using an allen key at the back of the hinge covers. The fixings for the seat are hidden in the close coupled seat. I want to tighten the seat fixings to the toilet but I do not want to risk any damage to the slow close mechanism if the allen key 'route' is not the correct way to remove the covers. Any advice will be appreciated. Stuart Livingstone, Glasgow, Scotland
