Sewage backs into the shower when the toilet is flushed

We rent a basement suite. Today, the shower didn't drain. When the toilet was flushed, sewage backed into the shower. The toilet water rose, and did Not overflow and skowly went back down, however, the water in the shower continued to rise. The upstairs suite, when the toilets are flushed have no affect on the sewage rising in the shower. A plumber came, said it was not a blocked toilet and that someone would come on Monday to see the problem better. Any ideas?

Sewage backs into the shower when the toilet is flushed

Since you are in a basement, your plumbing may run into an ejector pit, which is a heavy duty type of sump pump pit that can grind up toilet paper and shoot it up into a main drain pipe at a higher level. That may be why the upstairs doesn't affect your plumbing. Look around for a steel lid, about 20" diameter with two pipes coming out of it (usually 2 inches diameter). See if the circuit breaker is tripped. Sometimes, a light tap on the pipes near the lid can get the pump float to turn on if it gets stuck. Good luck.

Toilet wont flush completely. it may take 4 times or more to flush solids. i at first thought this was related to heavy rains we had been receiving in the area over a period of about 4 months. 2 days after the heavy rains, the toilet would flush fine. now, it does not flush properly ever, again, 4 times or more to flush everything. i installed fluidmaster whole toilet repair kit recently, toilet still wont flush properly. while showering, the toilet will gurgle constantly as long as water is draining from the tub. shortly after all water has drained from tub, toilet stops gurgling, then, 30-60 seconds later gurgling sounds come from the tub drain, and continue 6-7 times about 60 seconds apart. i have checked the air vent from the roof, it is clear. i have pulled the toilet, the drain below the toilet is clear. this tub and toilet are the only two fixtures draining to the mainline pipe leaving the house leading to the back yard. house is approx. 40+ years old, i suspect it drains into septic tank but not sure about septic tank. it is not a municipal sewer system. what could be causing the toilet not to flush, and all the gurgling of the toilet and tub?

There is no air release. the vent must be clogged somewhere. you can take a hose up there and see if it drains all the way or floods over. since the tub drain has a trap and the toilet itself is a trap, there has to bee a good amount of air pressure coming up without a release. i would say an obstruction. possibly at the junction of the main and the vent.

WE have a Santiflo Santiplus in our back bathroom

Hi,Fairly easy process if not the nicest thing to do!If you are comfortable with it, to clean:1. Turn off the electricity to the unit (should be on a fused spur)2. Disconnect the pipes (inlet and discharge) - you may get a bit of surplus water coming out so have some sponges and a bucket ready.3. Disconnect the wiring and take the unit out4. I clean my Saniflo's outside with warm bleach water .. - Wear rubber gloves to keep germs out of any cuts you may have / get on your hands - Put the elextrical cable in a taped up plastic food bag or similar to keep dry - undo the 'star screws' - Flip up the plastic retaining tabs with a flat blade screwdriver and gently ease the lid up. - I put bleach and warm water in, leave it for a while (30 mins) and then swish it around and empty out into an outside drain etc - If you want to use an old toothbrush to get into the areas by the float switch and under the motor it does help. I also used a hosepipe in the past which did the trick. - Also pay attention to the inlet port and the actual pipes under your sink for gunkput it back together, aligning the seal and plastic clips should just pop on (may need a firm push). Do up star screws and you are ready to reconnect the pipes and electrics.I use some tissue paper to check for any leaks around the pipes just to be sure!** Note, should not really use drain cleaner due to seals potentially getting damaged - Saniflo sell a special descaler product **Discharge pipework should be 22-30mm copper or PVC (not push to fit)Good Luck, let me know if you need any additional help

Toilet handle sticks

It sounds like the nylon nut which holds the handle in place is too tight. Try loosening that nylon nut just a little to see if the handle moves easier. Sometimes if they are over-tightened, the handle will be stiff and hard to operate.

Master toilet burps when flushed plus the shower drain smells bad

It is a vent pipe. It will be the one on the roof, closest to the problem. Sometimes, squirrels will drop nuts in it and stop it up. If that is the case, you may need a plumber. It could be partially blocked. You should have a trap on the shower but if there is not enough air for it to vent, it could cause what you're saying. If you don't want a plumber, you can figure out where the vent connects to the pipe, cut in the wall or cabinet, and check it there by cutting into it. Most plumbers have a cleanout that will clean this pipe out though. Hope this helps.

Master bathroom toilet burps when flushed. Therefore each flush is sluggish and will clog very easily. ( note; this house built in 1991 we are the third owner as of May 08 ). Two other toilets in house work perfectly however they are not near this one, confirmation when looking up at the roof from the backyard. I Had a plumber auger it under the home warranty it did nothing to solve the problem (not clogged). He had no other solution other than to have me making another 75.00 request to come back at a later date. I was wondering if venting would cause this and how to fix if this is in fact the problem? Thanks, A J It is a Briggs elongated toilet

If that toilet is over 12 feet from a vent stack you have a vent problem. If it has it own vent, try running a cable through that vent in case something fell into it,and is clogging it up, causing A lack of air above the water.
